About Hohhot
Hohhot, meaning "the green city" in Mongolian, is located in the middle part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and has a long history as a strategic site and commercial town in the north frontier of China. Since the founding of the new China, it has become the capital city of Inner Mongolia, and the center of politics, economy, science and technology, education and culture. Since reform and opening to the outside world, Hohhot has been ratified as the historical and cultural famous city, a pilot city relying on Science and technology and an opening city in north frontier, and has been developing trade interaction with People's Republic of Mongol, USSR, and East Europe countries. The total area of the city is 17000 square kilometers, of which the city proper is 120 kilometers. Under the jurisdiction of Hohhot, there are one banner, 4 counties, 4 districts and 1 state-level economic and development zone. Hohhot, with a total population of 2.58 million, including 1.4 million urban population, is a city inhabited by 36 ethnic group including Meng, Han, Hui, Man, Erwenk, etc.
The average altitude of Hohhot is 1050 meters, the annual average temperature 8≧, the annual rainfall 350-500mm and Hohhot enjoys typical temperate continental climate. Hohhot is the biggest hub for transportation, communication and postal China in Inner Mongolia. It is also a significant artery of Transportation, which links the inland of China with the Republic of Mongolia and Russia. The international special train container from Hohhot to Frankfurt is in use at present. It is one of the 45 hub cities in China. Hohhot -Beijing -Lanzou Railway Artery, which traverses the airport and western parts of the mainland, 4 state highway arteries, 5 province highways and 28 county roads converge on Hohhot. Various national and international flight routes have been established in the Baita( White pagoda) Airport in Hohhot. For the time being, the airport is being expanded and is intended to be used as one of the banding airports reserved for the Beijing's Capital Airport in its 2008 Olympic Games. By 2015 the airport will be able to meet the demand of flying 3 million passengers annually and 1740 passengers during rush hours. Besides, Hohhot is only over 400 kilometers to the capital Beijing and 380 kilometers to Erenhot, the inland open port. More than 80%of the universities, colleges and vocational schools, and academies and institutes for scientific research at the state level and Autonomous Region level are located in Hohhot. There are over 90,000 people pursuing the field of science and technology. More than 100,000 students are studying in the 19 institutions of higher learning. These institutions cover a variety of majors for the students' choices. Mutual development of education and vocational training are enhanced. Besides, the training system of the professionals engaging in the field of education is perfected. Therefore, a relatively scientific and strong technological force, resource and low-paid laborers can be guaranteed.
